“Everything that has happened in our lives is so that we can get to the place we are now. And that is the place that leads us to where we need to go next.” -Felicia Day, Embrace Your Weird

I put this on a picture of a zen rock “sculpture” on the ocean because it just feels so right.

I am loving “Embrace Your Weird: Face Your Fears and Unleash Creativity” by Felicia Day. This quote is about regret. It is about second-guessing your decisions and choices and then beating yourself up about all of your mistakes.

Don’t do that!

All of your choices, your mistakes and failures, your successes and triumphs make up where you are today. They make up all of your relationships, good and bad, and are unique to you alone. Those choices also affect who you are as a creative person. Embrace them.

Ms. Day goes on speaking about regret saying,

“I can’t regret my past because it gave me what I have in the present. I have learned too much, I have loved too much. I have earned my hurt too much… Different is not better. It’s just different.”

This quote brings to mind every time travel and alternate reality sci-fi novel I have ever read. The protagonist wants to change something tragic and it creates unexpected alternate realities, which are usually way worse than the things they were trying to prevent in the first place.

First off, those stories are fiction. There is no such thing as a time machine to change the past. You can accept the reality you live in and forgive yourself if you’ve made mistakes or bad choices.

Second, no one is perfect and each one of those small decisions make up the whole of who you are and where you are and what you are doing.

Lastly, you are not stuck. You are powerful. You can make new decisions to change your reality. You probably cannot change everything about your life because of decisions you made in your past, but you can make changes to your future.

You can buy a copy of “Embrace Your Weird: Face Your Fears and Unleash Creativity” by Felicia Day on Amazon.

  1. Thank you for the recommendation. One Saturday each month, I host a group of creatives. We share, encourage, and learn from each other, as we each explore and grow in our individual creative endeavors. I will share your post and this book.
