“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
I’ve never read this book, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but I did see the movie, which I thought was not particularly inspiring. However, I just recently came across this quote, and then the full quote shown above.
This is so true on many levels.
You are in charge of the change in your life. You can start a new relationship or end one. You can choose a new career, start a new hobby, go back to school. It is up to you. If you are really interested in something, why not make a choice to be curious, to investigate something deeper, to see what it takes and whether you really want to pursue it.
I wrote a book last year. I am slowly assembling a second book.
Did many people read it? No.
Did I write it to become famous? No.
Do I have unrealistic dreams for my next book? No.
Is that going to stop me from writing? No.
What’s the point? I love to write. I want to keep writing. It is nothing for anyone else. It is for me. It is for my own mental health and my own journey.
Why do I share it with those of you out there? I think my journey and my writing could help others in similar circumstances, so why keep it to myself?
Don’t give up on life. Don’t give up on experiencing new things. Don’t give up on your dreams even if they seem impossible.
Live life until your very last breath. You can change. You can learn new skills and try new things. Everything takes time and effort to learn, to master, to become great at. It is really all about what you invest your time and effort in.
Are you stuck? What do you need to do or let go of, to move forward? Think about it. Pray about it.
Don’t push your thoughts or fears to the back of your mind. Face those thoughts that keep you bound up, and then push through them.
