“Dandelion Wine” by Ray Bradbury

Wow! I know this book is a “classic” but also this was a really good book. Ray Bradbury is an excellent writer and in “Dandelion Wine” he takes on different themes compared to his strictly science fiction books, think “Fahrenheit 451” and “The Martian Chronicles.”

Many of the themes of this book revolve around every day concerns like growing older, changing times, nostalgia, and the constant change of seasons around us. Set in Bradbury’s hometown of Waukegan, IL (aka Green Town), Bradbury draws us into life in simpler times. He draws us into a 1920s suburbia possibly more rural than urban. Reflecting on a year in the life of the Spaulding family, Tom and Douglas are the two sons, mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, even great-grandma and the various interactions, traditions, and resistance to the inevitable change that comes as time goes on.

Though times were simpler, it didn’t equate to easier. Life was hard, work was plentiful, and the prospect of death was ever lurking. This book is the first in a series of two books, and I expect to read the second book, “Something Wicked This Way Comes” in the near future.

Definitely recommend!

  1. I love Bradbury. I have always identified with the little Martian in the chronicles that was torn to be everything for everybody. I just sent a copy of the chronicles to my granddaughter. My old copies are ancient paperbacks do msy have to find more substantial ones to read again
