“When Life Gives You Pears: The Healing Power of Family, Faith and Funny People” by Jeannie Gaffigan was an inspirational story of Jeannie Gaffigan’s unexpected brain tumor, the setbacks following surgery, and her overcoming spirit alongside friends, family, and God, who all contributed to her ultimate success.
What I enjoyed about this humorous memoir was the brutal honesty of what she endured, as well as her persistent desire to keep going, to overcome, to get back to normal. Some of the life lessons she learned along the way about giving up control, letting her husband Jim take care of her and the kids, and recognizing her own limitations in the compromised health state she found herself after doctors removed the tumor. While I have endured some trials and difficulties in my life, I can see some of the parallels and life lessons I took away from those experiences and how despite the pain and hardship, those same trials made me stronger, more self-aware, and better for having overcome them than if I had never had to face them.
I definitely recommend this book to every parent, mom, dad, and anyone who enjoys Jeannie (Jim’s writer) and Jim Gaffigan’s “brand” of comedy. I laughed. I cried. And I cheered as this strong woman of God overcame the trial of her life and lived to tell the story. Bravo!
Extra tidbit: Jim and Jeannie have the funniest “how we met” story that I have ever heard! You have to read this book to the very end just for that!
