I did some sketches with my girls over the weekend. We were looking through an art book for kids, “A Child’s Book of Art,” and they chose Vincent van Gogh’s “Bedroom at Arles,” to try to re-create with some oil pastels.
I only made it through my rough sketch phase. I hope to get some more time later in the week to add some color.
For reference, van Gogh’s painting is below. What I appreciate about the painting by van Gogh was his inclusion of other works of art he previously painted. There is his self-portrait on the wall. A little vain huh? Another (now famous) portrait next to his. He also has a beautiful landscape of the french countryside on the wall as well. Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists. This painting, like many of his others, contains such vibrant color, it has intricate detail despite the post-impressionism style that he pioneered. What I am coming to appreciate about the painting is how much expertise is required to make a painting like this. The shading, the color, the different aspects he utilizes that is so unique. The more I “study” it, the greater appreciation I have for it.
When I finish my rendition, I will include my oldest’s as well. You can decide whose turned out better 😉
