Courtney Peppernell’s book of poetry, “Pillow Thoughts” was a beautiful mix of poetry and prose interspersed with both the pain of lost love and the encouragement of one who has gone before.

Peppernell touches deeply on the raw emotion and pain of a relationship that ends and then speaks to the grieving with comfort and consolation from one who has previously traveled the same road. Her poetry speaks to her lover (another woman), who she bolsters, prods, and uplifts when her partner is at the end of herself.

The book flows between both sections (paragraphs) of prose, that transition to lines of free verse poetry similar to poets like Rupi Kaur, R.H. Sin or Amanda Lovelace. Her words speak to boundaries and individuation when a relationship ends. She also highlights the joys of a new relationship that blossoms, as well as the everyday growing more in love together.

Some parts of the poetry are a contrived and other parts drag, but all in all, it was an enjoyable read. I hope to post some of my favorite lines in the coming weeks. I will leave with one here:

“They always say that transitions happen with big events. Like a wedding, your birthday, or graduation. But maybe it’s really in the smaller moments, like when you look at yourself in the mirror and realize how far you’ve come or how far you still have to go.” -Courtney Peppernell, Pillow Thoughts

This type of prose fills the pages of this book. There are so many thought-provoking ideas that make you stop and contemplate where you are at and where you are headed. They insist on a moment of pause to reflect before proceeding.
