The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.
Ida B. Wells
Happy International Women’s Day! Ida B. Wells was an investigative journalist and civil rights activist during the post-Civil War era, during Reconstruction, and at the outset of the Women’s Suffrage Movement in the United States.
She was a vocal critic of the regular practice of lynching in the South in the US after three of her friends were lynched. She went on an anti-lynching crusade to spread awareness throughout the country and even abroad in Europe.
Later, she was involved in the Women’s Suffrage Movement demanding women equal voting rights as men. She also headed or was in leadership in several Black organizations fighting for equal treatment and rights as whites at the turn of the 20th century.
This inspirational quote is so true, even in our day today. When it seems like even the news we cannot take at face value, as a society we need to get to the bottom of what is actually true and then reveal it to any one who will listen.
