“Summertime” the latest project from Director, Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting, Raya and the Last Dragon) and Executive Producer, Kelly Marie Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is a unique movie unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
The movie feels a lot like a musical, but substitute the musical numbers with slam poetry. The film features 26 poets/actors and actresses who wrote and performed their own works on screen in the film. Here’s the list:

What I appreciated most about the film was the unique brand of storytelling that Estrada and his cast of poets employed as they tell the story of the intersecting lives in these young Angelinos lives. From heartbreak to loneliness to betrayal to misunderstanding to fear and anger this film captures the unique struggles and successes found among young people today just trying to find their own way. A central theme throughout the film that comes up over and over is home and family and belonging.
I really loved this movie. It is one I will be looking to see again, maybe when it is available to rent/buy.
