“Nomadland” starring Frances McDormand, directed by Chloé Zhao was the big winner on Oscars night this year. McDormand won the Best Actress Oscar for a third time tying Meryl Streep, one short of Katharine Hepburn, the only person who has ever won four. Zhao won for Best Director to become the first woman of color and the first woman of Asian descent to ever win the award. Zhao is only the second woman to have ever won the award for Best Director. Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win the Best Director prize for “Hurt Locker” in 2009.
“This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold out to the goodness in themselves and to hold out to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that,” Zhao said in her acceptance speech. “You inspire me to keep going.”
Below are the winners at the 2021 Oscars. My predictions were in bold for anyone keeping track 😉
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal
Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Anthony Hopkins, The Father
Gary Oldman, Mank
Steven Yeun, Minari
Winner: Anthony Hopkins, The Father
This was a “surprise” win to me. Chadwick Boseman lost his battle with cancer earlier this year and sending him off with a post-humous Oscar would have been the perfect way to honor his body of work and legacy. Alas, Anthony Hopkins took the prize. It was his second Oscar for Best Actor. He won his first Oscar for “Silence of the Lambs” in 1992.
