“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho

“The Alchemist,” the literary classic by Paulo Coelho is a very stimulating read. It is one part mythology, another part fantasy, and a third part philosophy. While I don’t think one could build a philosophy for life based on this book per se, there are lots of “smart” thoughts and interesting ideas to contemplate in this book. I feel like this is a book that you could really go down a rabbit hole during book club discussing.

The themes of this book all revolve around philosophical notions of self, purpose, desire, love, meaning, and so much more. Again, I don’t think there is much for me personally to take from this book regarding a way of life, but there are so many interesting discussions to be had that could come out of reading this book.

I really loved reading this short book, slightly longer than a novella, and one that I will likely be picking up again in the future. Great read!

  1. Read this book a few months ago! And I also really enjoyed the themes. I love the story telling and loved the magic that the author created.

  2. I read this book years ago and this led me to read more of Paulo Coelho’s books. I think they call the genre, magical realism and like you say Jason there is always plenty to think about and discuss. He is a talented weaver of stories. I might just read this again.😀
