Have you read Rupi Kaur’s masterful book of poems, Milk and Honey? It is amazing! And, for a limited time, it is on sale for only $1.99 on Amazon!
Powerful and raw, yet also intimate and delicate. Towards the very end of her first book she offers this as advice to young poets:
your art
is not about how many people
like your work
your art
is about
if your heart likes your work
if your soul likes your work
it’s about how honest
you are with yourself
and you
must never
trade honesty
for relatability– Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey
It is so good and so true. Poetry is not about anyone else. It’s not about trying to please someone or prove something to other people. It’s about you, your voice, your experience, your eyes, your perspective. If that resonates with others then great, but if it doesn’t that is OK. Don’t write for them. Write for you. Write because something in you, has to write.
