“It is also good to love: because love is difficult. For one human being to love another human being: that is perhaps the most difficult task that has been entrusted to us, the ultimate task, the final test and proof, the work for which all other work is merely preparation.” Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
Rainer Maria Rilke, a Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist exchanged letters with an up-and coming poet, published in 1929 three years after his death.
This collection of correspondence is a wonderful starting place for any new poet on how to write poetry and the various themes of life including love and fear and solitude.
I thought this quote from “Letters to a Young Poet” was poignant and inspirational advice for everyone on love and the noble task it is to love another person.
It’s funny. Because I think that love in its essence just is. And so it’s the easiest thing in the world to be, do, know, etc. I think what makes love difficult is the fact that we are human. Ha ha ha. Omg. That might mean I may just take myself out on some solo dates for…oh, I don’t know, the rest of my life. Kidding. I’m sure I’ll be brave enough to try again. One day. Maybe. 😂
