“Books are mirrors. You only see in them what you already have inside you.”
–Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind
Are you bookish?
If so, you would love The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. It is an interesting story about a mysterious book, “The Shadow of the Wind,” written by Julián Carax, an enigma who was murdered by an unknown assailant, and even after his death, there is a nefarious figure searching for the remaining copies of his few published books to burn in an attempt to stamp out Carax’s entire existence.
The story is based in Barcelona, Spain and the journey takes the reader to the Cemetary of Forgotten Books in the post-World War II era, a world recovering from the stain of fascism, and facing the peril of socialism and communism.
I love this quote by a juvenile Julián who loves to read and seems to see to the world differently from all of his peers.
Mr. Zafón is a masterful storyteller that weaves his tale of mystery and suspense all over Barcelona with countless twists and turns.
