“Embrace Your Weird: Face Your Fears and Unleash Creativity,” by Felicia Day is a fun “adult activity book,” my description for creative types. The goal of the book is to show yourself that Yes, you are creative, and to get you out of any creative funks by trying different seemingly outlandish activities drawing, writing, dress-up, and many more.
I found this book to be a fun and interactive read that helped me to see my own creative blocks and work through each of them one by one. The longest chapter, titled “Enemies,” was probably the best section discussing the numerous creative enemies you have to limiting your creative output and imagination, a place where most people get hung up.
The book has over a hundred activities to work through the creative process. One of my main takeaways was that creativity and art is something that should start for myself. It shouldn’t be something I am producing for others alone. That could be a secondary goal (maybe), but the primary focus must be on wanting to create something for me. But that also means that there isn’t any “wrong answers.” Nothing I create is bad or wrong or whatever label you want to put on it, because I created it for me. Even if I don’t “like” what I made, I can still see it as a learning experience and something for me.
Another major part of the creative process that seems obvious when you think about it but maybe not so obvious when it is “in process” is that creativity, art, making something is also tied in to your emotions and feelings. These parts of your brain are related and connected. This chapter on “Enemies” helps you get to bottom of your mental blocks by dealing with your past, breaking down big tasks into small ones, and helps you overcome fears in the creative process.
All in all, I loved this book by Felicia Day. I feel like there are so many new ways to kickstart my own creative process after reading this book and I feel like it could help so many people out there that get “stuck” and then give up.
