“Our Whimsical World” a new collection of illustrated short stories by Lauren M. Hancock, also known as Alice Well, is an engaging and fanciful new book that delights the heart and mind. The collection, her debut book, contains three sections, “for the younger ones, for the slightly older, and for the older ones” that divide the stories into those intended for children, young adults, and adults.
Each short story is almost like a fable with an underlying message for kids and adults about this fantastically, whimsical world that Ms. Hancock has created. Some of my favorite stories include “Saucepan Man,” who meets a fair maiden with a colander on her head and a real knack for cooking, “Frank the Fireless Dragon,” who needs some mentoring in fire-breathing, “Luxurious Kate,” who learns about the power of self-care, “Tormented Eleanor,” who despite her limitations finds that there is someone who loves her more than she could ever know, and “Igor the Eagle,” who learns to accept himself after he took a look inside himself.
The book is beautifully illustrated with interesting pastel drawings to match each story. These images transform readers into Ms. Hancock’s whimsical worlds of her characters and stories. They are particularly intriguing for children as you might read a story or two before bedtime and then ask the child what the story was about and what it means. These stories are a perfect way to connect with your child about various topics that might not otherwise come up in normal conversation, or maybe they had never thought about in the past.
This book is a lovely addition to my family’s library and will move into my queue of bedtime stories to share with all three of my children. I recommend you check it out and add it to your family’s library as well 😃
