Here’s my setup when I am making new abstract art painting. Water, paper towels, a rag are all a must.
I have lots of cheap acrylic paint for experimenting new ideas and art work. My palette is a great place to hold paint and mix colors off of the canvas/paper. You could always use a piece of cardboard or a paper plate instead of an actual palette if you so choose.
I have a full set of various paintbrush types, a set of palette knives, and an old loyalty card for applying and blending paint in different ways.
Painting is really an inexpensive hobby and if you start with the primary colors, black and white, mixing and blending is a fun experience as you learn how to paint and get a feel for your own personal style.
Canvases are not necessary to start but some heavy cardstock is a very cost-effective option when you are starting out. If you do choose canvases, remember you can always paint over what you did if you don’t like what you created.
Painting is a fun, relaxing outlet that can spur all kinds of now creative expressions that could help you in other areas as well.
