The 91st annual Academy Awards are this weekend on Sunday, February 24, starting at 8:00 PM EST (and 5:00 PM PST) and will be broadcast live on ABC. This year Roma, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, and The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, tied with 10 nominations apiece. BlacKkKlansman, directed by Spike Lee, who earned his first Oscars nomination, came in third with 6 nominations. As always, it should be a fun night of entertainment despite lacking a host to this point after Kevin Hart backed out when homophobic remarks he made years ago resurfaced.
The Academy faced even more backlash after it announced that four of the categories would be removed from the live telecast on Oscars night: cinematography, film editing, makeup, and live-action short. Another controversy the show faced was an announcement that only two of the featured songs would be performed during the Oscars: “Shallow” from A Star Is Born and “All the Stars” from Black Panther. The other nominations were later reinstated after public outcry.
Lastly, the awards night will be the 86th time out of 91 featuring an all-male Best Director lineup. The only time a female has ever won the honor was Katheryn Bigelow for Hurt Locker in 2010.
I have not seen all the Best Picture nominations this year, some because of a lack of interest and others because of explicit content which I would rather not subject myself to, but I feel like I have a nice list here to follow along on Oscars night, especially if you have a friendly bet with friends to see who can choose the most correct picks. My favorite film that I saw this year was Roma, which you can stream with a subscription to Netflix. The others I saw were Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Green Book, and Vice. At this point there isn’t a clear favorite for the prize and my selection was made on it being the most impactful film I saw. Experts have either Black Panther, The Favourite or Green Book as potential winners this year.
Did you see any of the nominees? Which one did you like? Share below in the comments.

Thanks for sharing the details of the upcoming Academy Awards. While I don’t follow current films, it is still interesting to read about them. Much of my film viewing centers around older films. I am sometimes addicted to TCM.

Black Panther was stellar, in my opinion!!!! I’m not a big movie person ’cause I generally just tend to find most modern movies mediocre and stale (not at all trying to sound like a snob hahaha) but I do like to keep up with the Marvel Universe more or less and Black Panther pleasantly surprised me! Nuanced characters, a score that fit the “feel” of the film, and just a really good plot-line. I hope it wins 🙂

I love Marvel movies too 🙂 I enjoyed Black Panther and I think it has a good chance as the whole category is up in the air right now.

I think Rami will win best actor. I’m surprised though that the guy who played Brian May, Gwilym Lee was not nominated for best supporting actor. For the film, they should have nominated Private War. I’m so surprised they didn’t. It’s such a good movie.
Let’s see.
And I heard that Adam Lambert & Queen will perform at the Oscars! Can’t waitttttttttt!

I saw Green Book and loved it. Think both those men deserve awards! I want to see A Star is Born, but missed it in our little theater. Need to rent it when it’s available – heard great reviews.
