Hurtling towards Cape Fear
Florence grows by the hour
She slurps up the warm seas
Energizing her like a doubleshot latte
Her eye narrows
Zeroing in on landfall
Surging ahead to inundate
Coastal towns fled
Beneath her immense squall

I am not trying to make light of the horrible storm inevitably headed towards North Carolina and bound to affect the rest of the Mid-Atlantic region in the US. Hurricanes are powerful destructive storms. I lived through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 holed up in our living room, the room nearest the center of the house, listening to the howling winds and beating rain all night without getting a wink of sleep.

We should continue to reduce our pollution and slow our contribution to climate change or else these megastorms will more and more be commonplace rather than an “act of God” as they are affectionately known to be.
