I Can Draw #Drawing #Art

I got some new books from the library a few days ago. Two of these books are drawing books. Both are beginner “classes” about the techniques of drawing basics. They start with the tools of drawing: paper, pencils, charcoal, pens, watercolor pencils, pastels, erasers, sharpener, rules, etc.

The introduction to Christine Allison’s book, “Drawing: Techniques and Tutorials for the Complete Beginner,” starts right where I am at: convincing the budding artist that they can draw.

Her opening statement sets the tone for the book:

Hello, I’m Christine, I’m an artist and I can draw. One these pages I will lead you to the realization that you too can draw.

The main difference between myself and Christine is the techniques she has finely honed and the years of experience she has dedicated to improving her skills.

I can draw.

I need not get disappointed or discouraged if what I draw doesn’t look like Christine’s drawing. I am only now just starting to draw.

What I am coming to understand as I learn new skills is that everything, even things that I have a natural talent for, takes practice, lots of practice, to get good at, to become proficient in, and a commitment to grow in that skill.

Just like my poetry and writing, I am still growing and learning. I am trying new forms, new techniques to create new pieces and communicate thoughts and ideas in new ways in my own unique voice and style.

I have no problem attesting that I am a writer and a poet. I have publishing articles online, I have had magazines publish my poetry, I have self-published a book of poetry, and I publish about three blogs per day.

I am also a painter. I have been putting paint on canvases and heavy cardstock for about four years on and off, but it is definitely something I want to grow in, to practice, to try new methods and techniques, to learn more and more.

Drawing is a new endeavor for me. It is something I want to try and learn to continue to grow in my creativity.

I can draw.

I am going to grow and learn… and draw.
