One of the primary ways I “connect” with God, i.e. pray, is through journaling, writing, poetry. It is my processing, internally checking in with myself, and externally listening, to what I hear God “saying” back to me.
When I am journaling, it is a time where I intentionally put my thoughts to paper to both learn about myself, where I am at, and also reflectively try to see things from the outside looking in. This processing is something I invite God into, where I can quiet my mind enough to stop worrying, release fear and anger, and in the calm of that space see and hear things to which I was previously deaf and blind.
Much of this prayer time is where my poetry originates. These thoughts then become a new poem where I have a new insightful perspective of something.
I feel like this exercise would be especially beneficial for any writer as journaling should come naturally to you. It is always a great place to start to avoid the dreaded writer’s block. I have found some real healing and resolution with some of the wounds of my past in this type of journaling, something thoroughly expounded upon in Brené Brown’s life-changing book, “Rising Strong.”
If you haven’t before or if you haven’t in a long time, give it a try, I bet you won’t be disappointed.

You’re right. It works. I get my greatest ideas from things I’ve written in my journal.

I have been journaling in one form or another since I was about 10… I have more recently blended more of my creative writing with prayer journaling… maybe in the past 10 years
